Weather & Wicked Courses Win: Weekend 5 Recap

Broughton and Cardinal Gibbons went North seeking strong competition, and ended up battling each other for the title.

Athletes from North Carolina were on the road Saturday, competing in South Carolina and Virginia and many points between, and they all encountered one common obstacle: the weather.  At best, it was wet and humid; at worst, thunderstorms delayed some of the events.  In nearly every case, the times were slower than usual due to soggy running conditions, although the competition was still excellent.  Another common theme for many of this weekend's meets: challenging courses.  From the big hills of Carolina Horse Park to the twisting trails of Weddington, including difficult layouts at the Furman Classic and Knights Crossing invitationals, runners from the Tar Heel State found themselves battling the terrain as well as the opposition.  When you put the weather and the courses together, you have a formula for slower-than-usual times - but that doesn't take away from the accomplishments of the runners and teams that placed high under these conditions.  On the contrary, when you can overcome the course, the weather, and your foes, you've done something.
