Hickory junior Ryan Hill had no equal this season in North Carolina.

He won his second straight N.C. 3A title, won the Foot Locker South Regional title in the fastest time ever (14 minutes, 46 seconds) by a N.C. boy at McAlpine Park and won five more large meets.

What North Mecklenburg's Kimberly Spano did was more than win a state title in dominant fashion.

Spano, a sophomore, ended years of frustration for Mecklenburg County girls at the N.C. 4A championships by becoming the second girl from the county to win a state title, and first since 1992 when Providence's Ami Herrman won her second straight.
