Cross Country Preview: NCHSAA 4A
By Ben Hovis / July 23, 2010 7:17 PM
The 4A girl's team race may be a lopsided one this year. The Green Hope girls are young, talented, and on paper are head's above the rest. They return 4 girls who have cracked 18:45, with their #5 at 19:04. With that 5, they will most likely be looking at reaching Nike Team Nationals this year and representing NC and the Southeast.

However, even with all their talent, there may be one other team that can go head to head with their 1-4. The Cary HS girls have proven themselves in the 4x800 and DMR during the track season. Hopefully their success on the track will lead to big things this XC season because they seem to have the potential to be a wonderful team as well. With no girls under 12:00 in the 3200m, it's obvious the focus during track is on the mid-distance events.

Another very talented team, full of youngsters, rising juniors and sophomores, is the team from the mountains. Watauga's top 5, on paper, doesn't contain a rising senior which is scary for 2 years from now. These girls ran well during track with 3 girls under 12:00.

Finally, another team to look out for will be Myers Park. MP is only 9th on paper but it seems their returning ladies improved a good bit during the track season. They had 5 girls run 12:10 or better and may have a pack rolling together this season.

Obviously, don't ever count out TC Roberson.

As far as individuals go, Sammy George of Millbrook is the obvious favorite and possibly a future Foot Locker finalist this year, too. Following her could be a good battle. Ardrey Kell's, Kaitlyn Kramer, cracked 18:00 at Foot Locker last year and has the only only other sub-18 returning time. She will most likely be joined by a few others, such as: TC Roberson's Brooke Gordon, Reagan's Kristen Henson, Davie County's Anna McBride, East Chapel Hill's Alison Smith, any of the Green Hope girls, Mount Tabor's Margaret Leak . . . I'll stop there as this coming season could see a lot of breakthrough's on the female side. I predict a very fast year among the 4A girl's competition! Here's a look at the top 25 returning runners by time.

On the boy's side, look for another year of "Who's #1?". I have a feeling this season will see a number of teams battling for the top spot. Most likely the 4A state meet will come around and we'll have no idea who the favorite is supposed to be.

Leesville Road holds the #1 spot in the rankings, but with a decent track season, they may not be the favorites. Aaron Smith had a solid track season and may be their top returning runner.

West Johnston is #2 on paper, but with a new school opening up and losing another runner to NCSSM, they may not be as good as they appear. Look out for Chris Garrett though, he will be in the mix at the top of the 4A classification.

Honestly, no team really jumps off the paper when looking at the track season rankings. This is what makes the upcoming XC season such a great one. Myers Park seems to always run well at Wendy's (where most of the following PR's are from), but they don't seem to hold it together all the way through the state meet. You can always count on Broughton and Green Hope to be near the top and I don't see any change in that one. A couple teams to watch out for that are either new to the scene or back on scene are: Jack Britt, TC Roberson, & Watauga. TC Roberson has seen a lot of improvement from their boys during the last year and I truly would look out for them.

Based on last year and track season, Blake Williams of Northern Durham should run away with the individual title. Blake was a Foot Locker finalist last year and ran a blazing 14:52 at McAlpine, just 6 seconds off the all-time best by a NC boy. However, all the talk is that there is no coach at Northern Durham . . . I'm sure that will change. There are some other boys who really stepped it up during the track season and will most likely have great XC seasons. Ryan Walling of Green Hope is the #2 returning XC runner and also ran 4:14, 9:26, and 1:57 open races during track. As I mentioned earlier, also look out for West Johnston's Chris Garrett. Obviously, Wakefield's Mitch Mallory is going to be one to watch as well. He dropped a 9:14 outdoors and should be ready to shoot for sub-15:00 next year.

Here's a look at the top 15 returning boys based on last year:

More Great American coverage

Cross country meet gets best
BY TIM STEVENS - Staff writer
NEWS & OBSERVER

Who has the best boys cross country team in the state?
Here's a hint. The school probably is in Wake County.
Here's another hint. The school probably is a member of the Cap Seven 4-A Conference.
Still don't know? Good answer.
Picking from among Sanderson and Broughton and perhaps even Leesville Road is difficult, bordering on impossible.
On a given day, any of the three could beat the other two. It has been that way all season.
All three schools are expected to contend for the state title that Broughton won in 2008.
The three schools have faced many of the top teams in the state and won major invitationals, but beating each other is tough.
Sanderson has been ranked No. 1 in the state by the cross country coaches for much of the year, but it finished fourth behind Broughton (124), Leesville Road (126) and the Greater Neuse River Conference's West Johnston (153) in the Wolfpack Invitational at the WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary on Sept. 19.
At the Seahawk Invitational on Sept. 12 in Wilmington, Sanderson won (122) followed by Broughton (159), the Tri-Nine's Green Hope (164), West Johnston (177) and Leesville Road (180).
Then last weekend, 3-A Chapel Hill (104) topped both Sanderson (105) and Broughton (110) in the Greensboro Invitational. West Johnston was 12th (316).
Broughton and Sanderson will square off again on Saturday, but their rivalry is expected to be mostly hidden during the Great American Cross Country Festival at the WakeMed Soccer Complex.
The Great American is one of the biggest (2,000 runners) and prestigious (several nationally ranked teams) events in the country.
Teams from 16 states, including New York, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Florida, Connecticut and Missouri, are entered.
The boys featured race, 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, includes Broughton, Sanderson Leesville Road and Green Hope, plus regionally ranked St. Xavier, Ky.; Blacksburg, Va.; Parkview, Ga.; Collins Hill, Ga.; Nashua (N.H.) Bishop Guertin and Warwick (R.I.) Bishop Hendrickens.
The field also includes Eastern Alamance's Jake Hurysz, who won the Wolfpack Invitational and the Greensboro Invitational, and Cary standout Mohamed Abushouk.
The top girls race includes nationally No. 3-ranked Saratoga Springs, N.Y., plus nationally ranked Glen Head (N.Y.) North Shore and Central Valley (N.Y.) Monroe-Woodbury. Locally, East Chapel Hill, Cardinal Gibbons and Green Hope are entered.

Wolfpack Invite from the N&O

N&O Article on Wolfpack Meet...9/19/09
Caps boys win 5K
Roberson girls win their event
CARY -- Saturday's Wolfpack Cross Country Invitational, held at WakeMed Soccer Park,
featured two girls breaking a course record and a return to the top spot for one of North
Carolina's best 4-A boys teams.
Broughton (124 points) claimed the victory in the boys 5,000-meter event, narrowly edging
runner-up Leesville Road (126). West Johnston (153) captured third place, while
Sanderson (187), ranked No. 1 after last week's Seahawk Invitational, finished fourth.
Ravenscroft's Wesley Frazier finished the course in just 17 minutes, 10 seconds, easily beating
the previous course mark for a high school girl. The Ravens freshman set what is believed to be
the fastest time ever for a North Carolina high school girl last week at UNC-Wilmington,
finishing in 17:04.
Carolyn Baskir (17:24) of East Chapel Hill finished second in the Wolfpack Invitational, which
also bested the previous mark by roughly five seconds.
"This course is pretty tough," said Frazier, who was unaware of the record-setting performance.
"I was really being pushed hard by Carolyn [Baskir], but I don't think about that stuff [records]."
Baskir's Wildcats finished in second place with 140 points, while Asheville T.C. Roberson won
the girls 5K with 102 points. West Johnston (170) equaled the boys' effort with a third-place
finish, and Cary (178) came in fourth.
Senior Reidy Jones (15:41) paced the Broughton boys with a fifth-place finish, and teammate
Pierre Mathews ran it in 15:59. Other Caps runners included Chase Mann (16:55), Parker
Johnson (17:05) and Hayden Parker (17:07).
Sanderson was missing two runners who were out due to illness.
"We lost to Sanderson last week by thirty points, so we had a lot to prove today," said Jones,
who is considering attending N.C. State, North Carolina or Clemson next fall. "We want to win
the state championship, so we knew we had to run hard.
"This is our home course, we know that hill is a killer, but we were able to pull through."
Jones also added that the Caps prefer a tougher course like WakeMed to a flatter course such as
the one at Wilmington.
Leesville Road, despite not having a single runner in the top 15, finished just behind
Broughton thanks to its solid depth. The Pride's top runner, Aaron Smith, finished in
16:25, while its fifth, Bilo Hoese (16:53), came in just 28 seconds later. Leesville Road was
also paced by Christian Klute (16:30), Andrew Byrum and Will Woodhouse (both 16:44).

4A Individual Pre-season Preview

Lauren Strapp is mentioned.

To be honest, the top spot is pretty much a toss up this season. Samantha George of Millbrook and Carolyn Baskir of East Chapel Hill should be the cream of the crop, but who's going to win? That's anyone's guess. I'm going to list Carolyn first since she's older, but this one is up in the air. There is no way you could pick a clear cut favorite among these two speedy ladies.

1) Carolyn Baskir, East Chapel Hill, Sr. - 17:50 on WakeMed course, where states are this year, 4:56.87 and 4A state champ over 1600m

2) Samantha George, Millbrook, So. - 17:48 at FL South, 8th returner, 10:56 & Raleigh Relays champ, 5:05 1600m

3) Laura Hoer, TC Roberson, Sr. - 18:48 5k PR, 5:00.21 and 3A state champ over 1600m, 2:15 for 800m

4) Kenyetta Iyevbele, Olympic, Sr. - 18:38, 5:01.20 for 2nd in 3A 1600m, 11:06 @ Raleigh Relays and 3A state champ over 3200m

5) Lauren Strapp, Leesville Road, Sr. - had a very good track season running 5:12 & 11:18, has an 18:57 PR for 5k, guessing she will continue success from track

Honorable Mentions: Sarah Hope, TC Roberson; Chelsea Hollingsworth, NW Guilford; Jessica Rossabi, Green Hope; Marie Mauhar, TC Roberson; Jenny Gallagher, Lake Norman

N&O Indoor Track Preview

www.newsobserver.com/content/media/2008/11/7/NO-11....

WAYNE DAVIS
SE RALEIGH * SENIOR * 55 HURDLES

Davis is one of the most sought-after track athletes in the state on the college recruiting scene. During February's state indoor championships, he broke the meet record in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.11 seconds.

PHILLIP BARREN, ATHENS DRIVE Senior; approached 22 feet in the long jump.

MICHAEL EDWARDS, MILLBROOK Senior; regional qualifier for the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.

TREY GEIGER, MIDDLE CREEK Junior; took second at the Tri-Eight Conference cross country meet.

BRIAN JACKSON, LEESVILLE ROAD Junior; didn't qualify in his first season but has run the 1,600 run in times in the low 4:20s.

DAKOTA PEACHEE, WEST JOHNSTON Senior; 3,200-meter run indoor state champion in February.

JOSH SNEAD, SMITHFIELD-SELMA Junior; transfer from South Johnson finished sixth in the 55-meter dash.

CARDINAL GIBBONS
Coach Benny Morgan said expectations are high with a talented group of girls, including sophomore Sarah Rapp (2-A cross country champion) and senior sprinter Chelsea Torres (qualified for state).

CARY

The Imps finished fifth at the state finals last year and lost a couple of strong seniors, but they have a strong core of talented sophomores, coach Jerry Dotson says.

They include Deanne Foshee (third in the 500), Sheridan Jordan, Jenna Christiansen (11th at the state cross country meet), Erin Foshee, and Morgan Stephenson (part of Cary's outdoor track 1,600 relay team).

GREEN HOPE

The Falcons finished in 10th place at the state finals in February, and coach Roger Collins said he has a promising group of freshmen joining.

Collins said he expects seniors Carly Roos and Cara Enright to provide leadership.

KNIGHTDALE

The Knights tied Clayton and Mallard Creek for 17th place at the state finals last season, but coach Effie Sanders said it will be tough losing eight seniors.

She said juniors Asia Pittman and Kiara Bridges and sophomore Tianna McHenry will lead a group of freshmen.

"These girls will be great role models," Sanders said.

LEESVILLE ROAD

The Pride finished in 16th place at the state finals, and coach Mark McLamb said he has a well-balanced squad this season.

Junior Breana Staves tied for eighth in the high jump in the state finals, and McLamb expects her to qualify in the triple jump and long jump this season.
