On-Site Coverage

Jacob Burcham 3rd in Mile at New Balance

NBIN 4x800s - Rhodes burns rubber, Stotans surprise

Brooklyn's Boys & Girls High School was right at home in New York City tonight at the Washington Heights Armory. The Kangaroos, long known for their success in the sprint relays (they are defending champs in the 1600 meter relay), notched a new title on their belt with an exhilarating come-from-behind win in the 3200 meter relay.

New Balance Indoor Nationals - VA Saturday Highlights

Quick highlights and summaries of day two performances (primarily top 10 finishes) from Virginians at the 2012 New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City.   Relays Highlights   Girls Shuttle Hurdles Relay - The Western Branch girls won their program's third national title in the shuttle hurdles in the past four years as the Lady Bruins bettered their own facility record time of 32.73 from one year ago in a winning performance of 32.31. With two of the faster performers in state history in the 55 meter hurdles between Group AAA state champ Taranisha Taylor and state runner-up Tiffany Ellick as well as depth beyond them, it was really on question if they could run a clean race in order to score another national title ring in the event. Averaging their time for four legs equates to roughly a 8.07 split each.     Girls 4x200m Relay Trials - The Western Branch girls appear to want to lower their own state indoor record which they established one year ago at this meet in the 4x200 meter relay. The Lady Bruins posted a swift 1:39.05 clocking in the prelims, which was fourth fastest among qualifiers and is the second fastest time in Virginia high school behind only their 1:38.74 performance at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. They will have their work cut out for them to get the win though as the fourth seed and the fastest qualifier in Sprint Athletics from Georgia already setting a new meet record in the prelims at 1:36.79. Running school and regional record times and moving themselves up on the VA all-time list in the process were the Northwest Region's Osbourn Park girls in 10th place at a 1:41.61 (VA #13 all-time) and the Central Region's Cosby girls in 12th place at 1:42.35 (VA #21 all-time).   Boys 4x200m Relay Trials - Not to be outdone by their female counterparts, the Western Branch boys are in even better position to go for a national title in the finals as their preliminary time of 1:29.42 sits them third fastest among the 6 qualifying relays, but only .06 of a second off the leading qualifiers from Penn Wood High School in Pennsyvlania. Ahead of them in the finals is the potential to win a national title and also break their own school record of 1:29.27 from their 2009 relay. Their qualifying performance ranks them as the 8th fastest 4x200 meter relay team in Virginia state high school indoor history.   Girls 4xMile Relay - The Blacksburg girls may not posses the lineup like they did in 2010 when they set the state indoor record in the 4xmile with a 20:24.07 performance at the indoor nationals, but another sub 21 minute performance was impressive and deserving of a fifth place All-American finish. Their time of 20:58.18 breaks down to a 5:14 mile average per leg, which is not surprising considering their team included sub 5 miler Hannah Brown and another All-State caliber runner in Kate Buss.   Boys 4xMile Relay - Oakton boys have ran some impressive times this indoor season, but can't seem to buy a title or honor. In the 4x800 meter relay at the state meet, Oakton ended up running a top 10 in meet history but had to settle for second. Their top runner Michael McNamee had one of the best distance triples in the meet outside of Cosby's Megan Moye, but had no individual title to show for his efforts. On day one of the New Balance Nationals, Oakton ran a sizzling DMR time under 10:20 but outside of the top 6.They were on the outside looking in again in the 4xmile relay on Saturday with only three seconds separating them from third place with their overall time of 17:50.67. Oakton traded finish orders from the night previous in the DMR with Colonial Forge (10th, 18:00.70) as both teams were averaging mile legs right at or under 4:30.    Boys SMR - Three squads from Virginia were among the top 10 overall, but outside of the top 6 for All-American between Bethel (7th, 3:32.08), Western Albemarle (8th, 3:32.32), and Fork Union (10th, 3:33.25). Cut-off for the sixth spot had a 3-4 second cushion though at 3:29.40 for Staples High School in Connecticut. A fast year for the event with four teams under the old meet record as Western Branch won the SMR in 2010 with a 3:30.71 performance and the times from Bethel, Western Albemarle, and FUMA should rank them within or near the top 10 all-time in state indoor history.   Girls 4x800m Relay - Megan Moye had to go to the well again to bring her team from behind, but taking the baton in last place against the nation's best 4x800 relays including the unbeatable powerhouse known as the Fayetteville-Manlius girls of New York, the Cosby girls will gladly take the final All-American spot of sixth place and slight improvement from their school record time of a year ago in 9:14.92. The performance elevates this year's Cosby relay to #7 fastest all-time in Virginia high school indoor history. Running well and placing high overall from the slower section were Northern Region squads West Springfield (10th, 9:19.89) and Oakton (11th, 9:20.97) as they improved upon their season best times from the state meet to move into #18 and #20 respectively on the all-time indoor list.   Boys 4x800m Relay - In the final race of the evening, Virginia was well represented by a Westfield squad who was right in the thick of things going into the last leg in second place. It showed how fast the anchor legs were from the other teams for a sub 1:54 open 800 meter runner in Tyrone Walker to drop his team from second and fifth place on the anchor leg, but Walker and Westfield in the end were pulled along to the second fastest 4x800 meter relay time in Virginia high school indoor history behind only the national record holders from Albemarle (7:36.99). Westfield's final time of 7:45.51 puts them at a 1:56.37 average per 800 meter leg and sets them up well this spring to go after the state outdoor meet record which Albemarle never got the chance to break and the 2003 Midlothian team owns at 7:42.    Field Event Highlights   Girls Long Jump - Louisa County junior Javanique Burruss had the lead in the indoor nationals long jump competition heading into the finals after her second jump of 19'8.25", but it was tough to hold off the late challenge from a daughter of a former Olympic champion in Mike Conley's daughter, Sydney. Sydney Conley took first away from Burruss and Arizona's Jasmine Todd on her final jump with a mark of 20'1.50". Burruss had to settle for a solid third place All-American showing at 19'8.75". Meanwhile, Nansemond River senior Shakeela Saunders also saved her best jump for last like Conley with a leap of 19'8.25" to move her into fourth place behind Burruss.    Boys Shot Put - Ranked sixth in the nation coming into this weekend, Kempsville's Taylor Frenia did three places better in the shot put finals with another mark for him over 60 feet at 60'3.25" to secure a third place All-American medal. The 2012 Group AAA state indoor shot put champion was in fourth place going into his sixth and final throw, but was able to muster his best mark of the day at that point to move into third place.   Boys Long Jump - A pair of state champions in the jumps from the recent Group AAA state meet also became All-Americans in the long jump competition at the Armory. Long jump state champion Jamarian Bates (4th, ) of Matoaca and triple jump state champion Anaquan Peterson (6th, ) of Lakeland both were able to produce marks good enough to insert them into the final top 6 standings. Peterson's mark of 23 feet was just shy of his season best (23'2.25"), while Bates had two foul attempts to limit him to only four legal marks and a top mark of the day several inches under his season best (23'11.25") at 23'4". A relief for Bates to earn his first All-American honor after finishing painfully close to top 6 at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals last June in 7th place.   Girls Shot Put - No appearance from the co-state indoor record holder Kiara Howell of Grassfield, but James Robinson's Chioma Onyekwere and Christiansburg's Rochelle Evans held down the fort with one of Virginia's best showings in recent memory in the girls' shot put. Group AAA state indoor runner-up Onyekwere secured her spot in the top 6 as an All-American with her second throw mark of 42'5.50"". The Group AA state champion Evans started out with a mark at 42 feet in her initial toss and was able to slightly better her mark of the day in her final attempt to nail down the sixth and final All-American position at 42'0.75".   Boys High Jump - It was not his best day, but it was good enough for J.R. Tucker senior Nick Simmons to become a two-time New Balance Indoor Nationals All-American in the high jump to follow up his top 6 finish from a year ago. Simmons was three inches under his winning clearance height at the AAA State Championships of 6'10", but a 6'7" clearance was good for fifth in this year's meet. Rashaan Jones of South Lakes can only wish that he could have been able to duplicate his 7 foot clearance from mid January at Liberty University as it would have easily won this competition with only a 6'9" winner. Instead, Jones only cleared 6'5" and finished 8th overall in the event.   Qualifying Trials Highlights   Boys 400m Dash Trials - Michael Cherry of Oscar Smith established himself as one of the state's premier sprinters with a fantastic 500 and 300 meter double state titles two weeks ago and now the junior is looking to make a name for himself nationally. Running against the clock and the nation's best spread out among 8 heats trying to be among the 8 fastest qualifiers in the 400 meter trials, Cherry was the fastest of them all as threw down the challenge to the field in the opening heat with a US #4 clocking of 47.66. Only 2007 national champion Sean Holston of Robert E. Lee has covered 400 meters faster in the NSSF's indoor national meet history. Cherry's prelim puts him ahead of some all-time greats and former Virginia national champions too in Lashawn Merritt and Ricky Harris.   Girls 60m Dash Trials - Phoebus freshmen Carolyn Brown was the lone Virginian survivor after round one of the girls 60 meter dash at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. The recently crowned Group AAA state champion at 55 meters, Brown qualified 10th out of 24 semi-finals qualifiers with a 7.62 clocking. Brown split 7.08 at 55 meters. She certainly has another gear left to use in the semi-finals to qualify for the finals after running a 6.96 in the 55 meter dash at the state meet.   Boys 60m Dash Trials - Group AAA 55 meter dash state champion Mustaqeem Williams of Forest Park opted not to compete at the indoor nationals, but the state of Virginia was represented in the 60 meter dash with its Group AA state 55 meter dash state champion in Harrison Scharf of E.C. Glass. Scharf was the only Virginian to move onto tomorrow's semi-finals as the 21st fastest qualifier with a 7.07 clocking in the prelims (6.58 split at 55 meters). His Group AA rival Desmond Smallwood of Lafayette (26th, 7.10) and Western Branch sophomore Mondryl Glover (25th, 7.09) just missed cracking into the second round of qualifiers for the 60 meter dash.   Girls 60m Hurdles Trials - Top hurdlers missing from Virginia at the indoor nationals included the Western Branch sub 8 second 55 meter hurdling duo of Taranisha Taylor and Tiffany Ellick, who instead ran on the victorious shuttle hurdles relay for Western Branch on Saturday at the Armory. Also no Leah Lott of Landstown present, so that left Chantel Ray of Hampton as the only one of the four US top 10 ranked hurdlers in Virginia competing individually this weekend. Lott struggled in her prelims race and failed to make the semi-finals along with past Group AAA 300 meter hurdles state champion Vamonie Boddie of Phoebus. However, Boddie's teammate Jazmine Vaughan was able to squeak into tomorrow's next round as the 23rd fastest of 24 qualifiers in 8.91.   Boys 60m Hurdles Trials - No issues for Grassfield senior Trey Holloway in his first round of the 60 meter hurdles. Holloway, the state leader and Group AAA state champion in the 55 meter hurdles, has been ranked among the nation's best all season long with times hovering in the 7.2s for the 55 meter hurdles. In his first 60 meter hurdles race of the year, Holloway posted the leading time among all semi-finalists with a US #3 clocking of 7.80. His prelim performance was better than the current US leader Donovan Robertson of Ohio as well as the other US top 3 performers in Jordan Moore of Georgia and Dondre Echols of Maryland. Including Christopher Williams of Pennsylvania, Holloway and the current US top 3 performers in the 60 meter hurdlers were the only sub 8 second times in the prelim rounds and appear to be the contenders in the field moving forward.   Boys 200m Dash Trials - Starting to get too short of a distance for his range as primarily a long sprinter/mid-distance runner, Michael Cherry of Oscar Smith was still able to put up a solid time on the boards in the 200 meter dash with a 22.00 clocking. His time was 16th fastest and the cut-off for the 8th finalist spot ended up being 21.81. Group AAA state 300 meter champion Cherry was the fastest performer from Virginia in the 200 trials followed by Group AA 300 meter champ Desmond Smallwood of Lafayette at 22.27 (27th fastest).     Freshmen Race Highlights   Freshmen Girls 60m Dash - Group AA state 55 meter dash champion Latrice Morris of Heritage has a lot of promise. She just won her first state title as a mere ninth grader and then showed herself well against some of the nation's best in her grade by placing third in the freshmen 60 meter dash finals with a 7.87 clocking (7.30 split at 55 meters). This year may have been a first in state history with freshmen state champions at the Group AAA and Group AA level in the same event for the 55 meter dash from Morris in Group AA and Carolyn Brown in Group AAA.   Freshmen Boys 400m Dash - Westfield's 4x400 and 4x800 relays may have another option this spring with freshmen Brenden Wallace emerging. Wallace in the freshmen 400 at NBIN placed third with a time of 52.39. Clover Hill 9th grader Brian Thomas ran just outside of the top 10 and nearly won his heat with a time of 53.09.

NBIN Boys 4xMile Wrap-up - An Island State Shocker

All morning, the buzz at the Armory around the boys 4 x mile was focused on two powerhouse programs that have dominated distance running in recent years. It was a two-horse race, the chatter went, and whichever favorite emerged – Shaker High School or New Jersey's Christian Brothers Academy – would also own a new national record. New Balance Indoor Nationals - VA Friday Highlights

No All-American finishes from VA in the championship events on Friday at the Armory, but Sophie Chase and the Lake Braddock girls gave it a great run but were just off a sub 12 minute time and school record in the DMR. (Photo by Don Rich)   Meet summaries and highlights of the top 10 finishers by Virginians in Friday's events at the 2012 New Balance Indoor Nationals.   MileSplit US Meet Page, Results & Coverage   Elite Division Event Summaries   Only her miss in her first attempt at 5'5.25" kept Matoaca sophomore Brianna Hayes from breaking into the top 6 and earn All-American honors to add to her indoor state title in the high jump two weeks ago. (Photo by Don Rich)   Girls High Jump - Matoaca sophomore Briana Hayes cleared a height of 5'7.25", just a foot under her winning height at the AAA State Championships two weeks ago, to place 7th overall at the indoor nationals. An earlier miss in her first attempt at 5'5.25" (1.66 meters) prevented Hayes from joining three others in a tie for fourth place and top 6 All-American honors.   Girls DMR - Lake Braddock and Ocean Lakes girls finished 8th and 9th respectively with times just over 12 minutes. Lake Braddock, anchored by Foot Locker All-American Sophie Chase, ran a time of 12:02.06, which was 10 seconds off the state record set by Hidden Valley last year at 11:52.24 and only a second off their school record run of 12:01.86 in 2009. The time of 12:08.54 by Ocean Lakes is the fastest by a squad from the Eastern Region and moves them well inside the top 10 times in state history for the event.   Boys DMR - Great times posted by Colonial Forge (8th, 10:15.85), Oakton (10th, 10:19.69), and Atlee (11th, 10:21.62), but no All-American quartets in a fast event at this year's nationals despite VA #7 and VA #9 all-time runs from Colonial Forge and Oakton. Atlee's time was a bit of a surprise considering they do not have a sub 4:20 miler like Colonial Forge's David Pennesi and Oakton's Michael McNamee, but were led off by an All-State 1000 meter runner in Griffin Carmichael on the 1200 meter leg.    Girls 5000m Run - Group A state cross country champion Hannah Rose had no problem shaking off race rust without an indoor season and picked up ahead of where she left off in the fall. The Wilson Memorial junior Rose bested her cross country 5K best from the fall at Foot Locker South (18:13) with an 18:08.05 PR in the 25 lap indoor event to place 17th in a field of 39 runners.   Boys 5000m Run - Coming off his first state title with a Group AA 3200 meter victory two weeks ago in Lynchburg, Cave Spring senior Cody Seymour kept it rolling in New York City. Seymour the  third fastest 5K time indoors in Virginia high school history with an 11th place effort of 15:08.19. A significant time drop from his previous 5K best in cross country at 15:34.   Colonial Forge's David Pennesi running just off one of the nation's best distance runners in Edward Cheserek of New Jersey as anchor legs in Friday's distance medley relay at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. Colonial Forge's time of 10:15 joins a short list of past Virginia relays who have ran under 10:20 indoors in the DMR. (Photo by Don Rich)   Emerging Elite Division Event Summaries   Girls Pole Vault - Just missing the cut-off for the elite championship division as the girls pole valut continues to improve in depth and quality at the national level, Fluvanna County sophomore and Group AA state champion Hannah Meador reached a new personal best height of 12'4" to win the emerging elite division at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. With her winning clearance on Friday, Meador now eclipses Group AAA state champion Felecia Majors of South County as the state leader for this indoor season and also moves her to being tied for VA #4 all-time indoors with former Atlee vaulter Emma Dejarnette.   Boys 60m Dash - A rising young sprint star from Chesapeake in Grassfield sophomore Vincent Lowe won the 60 meter dash in the emerging elite division with a meet record clocking of 6.88. Lowe recently placed as a state runner-up in the 55 meter dash finals at the AAA State Meet behind another sophomore in Forest Park's Mustaqeem Williams. His time of 6.88 ranks among the top five fastest times run by a Virginian in the rarely contested 60 meter dash event in the past 10 years. Fork Union's Denver Wright also qualified for the finals and placed 7th with a time of 7.03   Boys Shot Put - Grassfield's Austin Johnson was glad to finally not see Kempsville's Taylor Frenia sharing the same throwing circle with him on Friday at the Armory. After having a great indoor season with plenty of marks over 55+ feet, but taking runner-up to the eventual AAA state champion Frenia in many meets, Johnson finally got to visit the winner's circle in a meaningful meet this winter in the emerging elite division at NBIN. Johnson made it two champions on the day from Grassfield High School in joining teammate and 60 dash winner Vincent Lowe with a field best mark of 56'0.50". Johnson's winning mark came on his first throw and was never challenged for first seriously after that.   Girls SMR - The Battlefield girls quartet of Virginia Hill, Taylor Cockrell, Jasmine Hill, and Ellison Grove were event winners of the emerging elite race for the 1600 meter sprint medley relay in dominating fashion with their final time of 4:08.13.  They possibly deserved to be in the championship elite division instead after winning the lower division by a margin of 7 seconds.Only five other relay squads from Virginia have ran faster indoors in the past 10 years for the SMR.   Boys 60m Hurdles - Patrick Henry (Ashland) junior Travis Phillips is setting himself up to be the state's top returning hurdler for the 2013 indoor season. Following a PR performance of 7.59 and 4th place finish in the AAA state meet finals of the 55 meter hurdles, Phillips continued to excel at the national stage. Phillips made the finals in the 60 meter hurdles with the fourth fastest time in the prelims at 8.22 and ran a much cleaner and swifter race in the finals to drop down to 8.12 and more importantly moving up to finish second overall to earn a medal.   Boys Pole Vault - Lake Braddock senior Sean Daugherty seems to perform well when the stage is greater and the pressure is on. Daugherty was a surprise state runner-up in the pole vault last spring and then achieved a new personal best height of 14 feet at the recent indoor state championships. Daugherty took the bar to even greater heights on Friday at the Armory to a elevation of 14'8.25" to earn himself a  second place finish and medal in the emerging elite division. Daughtery will be in contention this spring for the Group AAA state title at this rate of improvement as well as his now established reputation as a championship meet performer.   Boys 2 Mile Run - Thomas Edison sophomore Louis Colson last year at the New Balance Indoor Nationals was challenging fellow Virginian in Ryan Thomas of Albemarle for the win in the freshmen mile. Colson ended up taking second in a breakthrough race for him and returned back as a sophomore to the Big Apple moving up to the emerging elite division at the 2 mile distance. After running a PR 1600 time of 4:19 to grab the sixth and final All-State spot, but having difficulty doubling back n the 3200 at the state meet, Colson got a fresh opportunity at the distance which produced a third place result for him and time of 9:26.85 to convert just under his season best 3200 meter time.   Boys 200m Dash - After being a state qualifier in Group A last spring in the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash, Nelson County's Rodrell Smith will use his personal record 200 meter tying time of 22.46 to claim fourth place in the emerging elite division at the indoor nationals to spring board him to expectations of being an All-State finisher in the spring. Smith had a limited indoor season since there is no official Group A state indoor season or championships, but ran a solid 300 meter time of 36.35 at Virginia Tech.   Boys Triple Jump - Grassfield continued to add to their total medal count in the meet as Dominique Torress' fourth place in the triple jump added to the golds earned by teammates Vincent Lowe and Austin Johnson in the emerging elite division. The fourth place in the second tier division at indoor nationals was a nice redemption and consolation prize for Torress after fouling out on his three jumps at the indoor state championships.   Girls 2 Mile Run - Blacksburg's Kate Buss has a been a steady performer all year for her team in cross country and indoor track. Her consistency and improvements were rewarded with a medaling 6th place personal best run of 11:06.08 in the emerging elite race. A Group AA All-State performer at 1600 and 3200 meters two weeks ago, Buss' time in New York converts down to a 11:02 3200 meter performance which would be 6 seconds faster than her previous best.   Boys 800m Run - Norview senior Marquis Worsley ran only a second off his outdoor best at 800 meters with a 6th place run of 1:56.33. Worsley is one of the best distance runners to come of the Eastern District in many years and decades since Norview enjoyed the likes of the great Joe King (4:12 1600/1:50 800) at the start of the 1990s, who Worsley will try to give chase to some of King's school records this spring. Worsley was an All-State finisher in the 1000 meters with a PR of 2:34.08 and broke 4:20 for 1600 meters at last year's outdoor state championships.   Girls 200m Dash - Charlottesville sophomore Taylor Watkins was an All-State performer in the 300 meter dash (4th) and just missed making the finals of the 55 meter dash (10th) at the AA State Meet in Lynchburg two weeks ago. At the New Balance Indoor Nationals, Watkins was able to qualify for the finals of the 200 meter dash in the emerging elite division with a time of 25.58. She finished 8th in the finals with a time of 25.77.   Girls Shot Put - Top finishers from Virginia included Nansemond River freshmen Zakiya Rashid with a 9th place mark of 37'3.75" and Cosby senior Logan Edwards with a 10th place throw of 37'0.50". Rashid has had a succcessful first high school season and should be challenging for marks over 40 feet soon, while the VMI recruit Edwards looks to be one of the state's top performers in the discus throw this spring.   Boys 4x800 Meter Relay - Following a surprising 9th place finish of 8:08 at the AAA State Meet as one of the last seeded teams at the AAA State Meet with a previous season best time of 8:25, the Clover Hill boys' 4x800 matched their state meet time in the school's first trip to an indoor national meet in years. The quartet should challenge for a sub 8 minute time in the spring after a 10th place showing in the emerging elite division in a time of 8:08.95 as the top finishing VA squad in the race.

MileSplit XC Journal: Angel Piccirillo, Homer Center - Entry #11 - March 6th

Angel Piccirillo enters her senior season as one of the top distance runners in Pennsylvania, as well as the U.S. Bursting on the scene as a sophomore - Piccirillo won her first of two indoor state mile titles, first of two outdoor 1600 meter titles and first of two Penn Relays COA titles. So far in her senior year, she has added a second state title in AA cross country, and a Northeast Region title and 2nd Foot Locker Finalist qualifier.

Athlete Spotlight: Adam Visokay

Photo by Ryan Kelly Adam Visokay did not start taking running seriously until his junior year and the rest of Virginia is grateful for his late start or he would have left many more runners in his wake of his furious final lap kick at 3200 meters. After catching everyone off guard last indoor season with a surprise runner-up finish in the 3200 meter run, the UVA recruit Visokay has turned it on at the end when it matters each following season. With a sub 60 second last lap in last spring's VHSL Group AAA State Outdoor Championships, Visokay was able to run down the two pre-race favorites for his first state championship in a 9:09 PR. This fall, Visokay ran for team instead of individual glory for much of the season with one of the top ranked cross country teams in Virginia. However, after a second place team finish and third place individual finish at the state cross country meet behind two eventual Foot Locker finalists in Ahmed Bile and Sean McGorty, Albemarle coach Buz Male let his star runner loose at the NIke Cross Nationals Southeast regional in Cary, North Carolina. Visokay unleashed a 5K PR of 15:10 at the Southeast Regional to place second and earn the trip to Oregon for the national race. In Portland, Visokay showed that he had another level of performance or gear in him as he placed 10th (15:37) in a field including many of the nation's best distance runners to rival the top 15 performances by McGorty and Bile at the Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego. This weekend at the New Balance Indoor Nationals, Visokay once again gets an opportunity to measure up against the nation's elite at the two mile distance following a second state title in his high school career with a 9:15 3200 PR run at the indoor state championships on February 25th. MileStat.com interviewed Visokay, the two-time state champion at 3200 meters, prior to his indoor nationals race.

Coach editorial: The push for indoor track

Since my running days at Furman, I have been fascinated by running on the oval of an indoor track.  The short fast races, the quick tight turns, the sound of the starter’s pistol echoing off the walls and ceiling, and the opportunity to compete during the winter months was an exciting time in my life.  When I started coaching, I wanted my athletes to have the same experiences, so I would take many of them off to Knoxville or Clemson or Johnson City or anywhere close where other high school athletes would compete against us.  The idea of new, indoor school records, traveling to new cities in a different venue, and much better performances in May brought many athletes out for track and field that may never have come out before.  But rules in South Carolina were either changed or more strictly enforced and the opportunities to do these meets started slipping away.

Athlete Spotlight: David Johnson

Photo by Andrew Kicinski   Coming from a family of great jumpers including his father as one of his coaches and his older brother Anthony as high school outdoor nationals champion and older sister Joyce as a past Group AA state champion, David Johnson had to leap in some big footsteps with his accomplished family name at Charlottesville High School. Next weekend at the New Balance Indoor Nationals, Johnson is attempting to match his brother and add another national title ring for the Johnson household. "It's been great to try and mirror his accomplishments," said David speaking of his brother Anthony. Something that he took away from his big bro, "He always wanted to improve. He was one of those guys who didn't mind learning a lesson here and there with a bad meet." The current #2 ranked triple jumper in the United States this indoor season with a season best mark of 49'10.25", Johnson is excited about competing in his third high school national meet. "Looking to do some big things and represent Virginia." Johnson was a surprise finalist last year and finished 8th at the 2011 New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City after having the best mark from the first flight. MileStat.com interviewed the two-time Group AA state triple jump champion and Virginia state indoor state leader as he preps for the indoor nationals.
