Distance

As mentioned in the 4A preview, there has been a dramatic upswing in the strength of girls' distance runners in our state.  This is apparent in the 1A/2A/3A group, as well, where 15 girls have already run under 12 minutes for 3200 this fall (although not all of them are competing in the winter season).  Three of those girls have already run faster than last winter's 3200 state champion!  After all the success that these athletes have had during the fall season, I would expect a few of them to try out winter track for the first time this year.  Athletes to watch, in no particular order:

Blake Dodge (West Carteret)

2nd in the 1000 last year, top returner, 3A state champ in cross country

Carmen Hilliard (South Brunswick)

3rd in the 1600 last year, top returner, has run 11:44 this fall

Mallary Price (Weddington)

3rd in the 3200 last year, top returner, ran 18:29 for 5K this fall

Natalie Andrejchak (Jay M Robinson)

Freshman has run 11:22 for 3200, 18:36 for 5K this fall

Rachel Bartolomeo (Cardinal Gibbons)

Did not run last winter, has run 11:35 and 18:40 this fall

Jentzen Jones (Fike)

Did not run last winter, has run 11:24 and has a 5:12 PR for 1600

Sprints & Hurdles

The talent wave on the girls' side continues into the 1A/2A/3A speed events, where some of the state's best athletes reside.  The state champions in all four of these events could definitely hang with the 4A runners.  There might be a little competition brewing between the classifications, as well as within them; bragging rights are on the line in February, and the smaller-school athletes will be eager to show they are just as fast as the big schools.  Athletes to watch, in no particular order:

Briana Haith (Granville Central):

State champ in the 300, 3rd in the 55 dash; indoor 200 time is US #8 returning, NBIN finalist at 400

Janeiyah Collins (Monroe):

3rd in the 55 hurdles, top returner; also a strong sprinter, great 300 hurdler

Jazmen Genske (Hibriten):

2nd in the 55 dash last year, top returner

Naomi Alston (Douglas Byrd):

2nd in the 300 last year, PR of 56.22 in the 400

Tanazia Owens (Harding):

2nd in the 500 last year, 400 PR is 57.60

Abigail Bost (Williams):

3rd in the 500 last year

Nora McKiver (T.W. Andrews):

9.26 PR for 60 hurdles, 2A state champ in 100H and 300H

Paisley Simmons (T. W. Andrews):

PR of 7.82 for 60 dash, plus 11.83 and 24.37 in the spring/summer

Marissa Bellamy (Bunn):

Did not run last winter, PRs of 11.91, 23.90, and 54.56 in the spring/summer

Field Events

Some of the best athletes in the state fall into this category, from elite high jumpers to top-flight triple jumpers.  This is a great time to be a fan of field events in North Carolina, because there are talented girls in nearly every classification.  Many of these young ladies are also very good on the track, but they are listed here because their best rankings come in the field events.  There are too many good field-event athletes that did not compete in the winter season last year to name them all, but it will be interesting to see if some of them compete this winter.  Athletes to watch, in no particular order:

Sage Proffitt (North Buncombe):

State champ in the pole vault, hit 12' 0" outdoors; also state champ in the 500, 56.84 for 400 in the spring

Francesca Evans (Cummings):

State champ in the triple jump, PR of 39' 9" is US #21 returner; also a strong hurdler

Hailey Cook (Hendersonville):

2nd in the shot put last year, top returning thrower in the state with 41' 10.5" PR

Qizeah Jackson (Westover):

2nd in the high jump last year, PR of 5' 6"; also a good sprinter

Emily Kimble (Owen):

State champ in the high jump, PR of 5' 4.5"

Tess Rogers (North Stokes):

3rd in the vault last year, PR of 11' 1" in the spring

Raven Covington (Cuthbertson):

2nd in the long jump last year, PR of 17' 4.5", also a good 100 runner

Tori Elliott (Cox Mill):

Strong sprinter did not jump last winter, won 3A spring championship in long jump with 17' 10"
