Day 3

Keila Grigware (Biddeford) earned her first All-American award with her 6th place finish in the javelin. Grigware launched her 6th place throw on her 3rd throw in the trials, 135-9.

 

In the boys 1600m Will Geoghegan (Brunswick) ran his last race as a high schooler, and put out one of his top performances. Geoghegan running in the 2nd section of the mile, started out in 10th place after an opening 400m of 63.99, Will would actually drop back one spot at the 800m-2:07.9. It was go time for Will during the 3rd quarter, as he moved from 11th to 8th, running a 64.03, and Geoghegan left nothing in the tank as he blitzed the final lap in 61.65 to move to 3rd a personal best 4:12.76. Overall his time placed him 9th in the competition. Jack Terwilliger (Cheverus) finished 36th overall in 4:27.10

 

In the girls 1600m, Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) was shooting for her 2nd All-American award of the meet. Leonardi got a taste of a kickers race, as the field was bunch together through 800m. Abbey was in 9th 2:34.8, but the field of 11 was within a 1 second of eachother. The pace quicken in the 3rd 400m, as the leader were 70.x, Leonardi remained in contention with a 71.65 lap which left her in 10th. Abbey would finish with her fastest lap, 69.78 to rally for 7th place in the heat 4:56.22. Leonardi would wind up 11th overall as a few girls from the previous section ran faster. Abbey's time is an all-time Maine best for the seldom run Mile.

Day 2

Evan Vincent (Maranacook) won the 1600m boys racewalk national championship, Vincent clocked 7:10.5 to win the event by 6+ seconds. Christian Malarsie (BE) was 3rd 7:52.59, earning an All-American award while Austin Michaud (Hampden) was 4th 8:14.14. In the girls race Abby Dunn (EL) 7:38.18 the indoor national champion just missed claiming the outdoor title as she put on a furious finishing kick but came up a bit short, still Dunn earned another All-American award. Jennifer Thuotte (Gorham) was 5th 7:48.08, while Courtney Williams (Waterville) 7th 7:58.62 just missed an All-American award .

 

In the emerging elite 2 mile Jack Terwilliger (Cheverus) went through the mile in 4:39.21 in 2nd place, Jack moved to the lead with 800m to go, passing in 7:01.72. He would remain in front until the end, closing in 4:43.9 for the last mile to clock a personal best 9:22.99 for 2 miles and win the emerging elite race, in the process he set the meet record for the event.

 

In the first heat of the 2 mile saw Will Geoghegan (Brunswick) in the lead pack right from the beginning, at 800m 2:14.06 Geoghegan was in 4th. At the mile crossed in 4:29.16, he had moved to 3rd. The quick early pace started to take its toll in the humidty, by 800m to go Will fell back to 7th 6:55.45. He battled well over the last 800m to remain 7th in 9:22.71.

 

In the girls fast section of the 2 mile Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) mixed it up with the top distance runners in the country. Abbey started off smartingly in 10th place through the 400m (74.35), Leonardi would remain 10th after the next 400m 76.34 (2:30.69), the pace would slow a bit in the next 400m to 79.69, but moved up into 8th place. At the mile 5:11.38, she has moved up one more spot to 7th. The 5th lap was a good one for Abbey as shed dropped back down to 80 second lap as she remained in 7th. Lap 6 would she her move up one more spot to 6th and the shot at being an All-American was looking better and better, as some runners were sropping back off the fast pace. Leonardi would ramin in 6th at the bell crossed in 9:13.94. With nothing to lose Abbey started to move really well over the last lap which she closed in 72.65, good enough to move her up to the 4th spot. Her time 10:26.59 was a huge personal best, & a new state all-time best for 3k and 2 miles.The 4th place finish earned Abbey her first All-American award.
