Griffin Cascone (Ardrey Kell)
Last year the fastest freshman from the indoor track season was Tim Haughton (Apex Friendship) at 4:41.73 (Andrew Hammel was a sophomore who reclassed at Christ School this summer). It's early in December and Ardrey Kell's Griffin Cascone had already run 4:45.20 for the 1600! Cacone ran 16:49 as a freshman this cross country season and added a 68th place finish at the NCHSAA 4A State Championships. Carson Helmer (Sanderson) has also broken 4:50 running 4:49.83.
Cascone is one of three star freshman at Ardrey Kell. Murphy Smith and Charlie Walker ran 16:12.16 and 17:12.40 this cross country season. Smith kicked off his indoor track career last weekend running 10:10.83 for the 3200, and Walker had run 4:58 twice so far this season. This will be a fun group to watch the next few years. Along with Cascone, Smith and Walker their top 5 this XC season was composed of 2 sophomores and 3 freshman.
