Girls #CountdownToXC Day 17: Serrano

Things didn't quite come together for Serrano in 2016. After a very promising performance at the Southern Section Prelims, the Diamondbacks took a step backward in the finals and missed advancing to the state meet. That can happen when you have 3 freshmen and no seniors in the top 7, but we saw the potential of this squad when they posted a strong team performance (and big times) at Woodbridge. Returning #5 runner Julia Brenner led the team's 1600 times this past spring, and the Diamondbacks put 4 girls under 11 in the 3200 (including a potential new addition to the top 7). Maribel Aguilar is definitely a gamer: she was the only member of the team to PR in the Southern Section Finals, earning a spot among the top 10 returners in the Division 2 race. With a returning front five separated by only 22 seconds this squad, Serrano is poised to write a different finish to the 2017 season - I'm calling a top 10 finish at the state meet, even in a division that is absolutely loaded this year.
