NCHSAA 4A Boys Indoor State Championships Preview

Field

Shot Put

Austin Harrison (West Forsyth) comes in as a heavy favorite in this event with an NC#8 all-time indoor mark of 58-0.5.  Harrison has had a few throws at 54 feet since then and could leave the door open for sophomore Chancellor Crawford (North Meck) and Jaylen Spellman (South View) if he has an off day.  These are the only three boys in 4A over 50 feet this year.

High Jump

With 9 boys ranging from 6-2 to 6-4 this indoor season every attempt and every miss is going to be crucial as the result has a high probability to end in a tie.  Sam Handy (Cary), Deondre Cooper (Pine Forest) and Seth Clyburn (West Forsyth) have each jumped 6-4 and will enter as the favorites on Saturday morning.  But with the 17th and final seed being a 6-0 jumper anyone can truly walk away as the champion.

Long Jump

Austin Richardson (Porter Ridge) enters as the favorite as the only boy over 23 feet with a mark of 23-0.5 a week ago.  J Johnson (Panther Creek) has the next best jump of 22-4.5 followed by and Ezekiel Hokett (North Meck) at 22-3.  I watched Johnson's 22-4.5 at the VA Showcase and he certainly left at least 8 inches on the board, showing he has potential to go much further if he can connect on one of his 6 attempt.

Triple Jump

Ryan Smith (Harnett Central) comes in as the favorite with a season's best mark of 46-10.  Over a foot further than the rest of the field.  Tyrese Kelly (Pinecrest) poses the biggest threat to him with a best mark of 45-6.  This is the largest event at the state meet with 36 competitors slated to compete.

Pole Vault

Three boys come in with equivalent Pole Vault marks this indoor season with Doug Scott (Broughton), Trevor Justice (Jordan), Seth Rabinowitz (Providence) and Jonathan Lehe (Lake Norman) all at 13-6.  Beyond that, 4 others are entered a 13-0.   Justice is the top returner from last season with a 5th place mark of 13-0.
