Nike Outdoor Nationals: Field Events Recap

Field Events: Complete Recap from both days

As a distance runner sometimes I fail to understand the full nuances of field events.  It’s hard to grasp the exact science of each event.  But after watching almost all of the field events this weekend, I can now say that each individual athlete in each event puts the same amount of energy, dedicated, and determination as the track athletes.  For the athletes who competed in the field events here are some staggering stats: 2 National Champions and 8 All-Americans.

The women’s discus saw one national champion, Butler’s Asylnn Halvorson (which brought Butler High School’s total to three this weekend).  She won on a throw that carried over 154 feet, winning the event by three inches.  Asylnn also competed in the shot put on Friday earning another All-American title to her collection with a throw of 44 feet 9 inches.

The other national champion belonged to Jacinda Evans in the long jump.  Her winning jump was 19-9.5, which was also her last jump of competition.  That jump put her over the top and onto the top platform.  Jacinda competed in a number of events over the weekend, three to be exact, and to quote the stadium announcer “she does everything”.  Also earning All-American status in the long jump were Tyler Ford and Chrishawn Williams who finished fourth and sixth overall.

From Friday’s field events the triple jump had multiple All-Americans from the state.  Radiance Evans was fifth jumping 39-3.75 and Sherice Walker was sixth with a jump of 39-3.25.  Radiance graduated from high school so this was a nice way to go out in her last meet, while Sherice is just a junior and has another year left to achieve loftier goals.

Earning the last All-American spot is the pole vaulter Scott Houston placing third and clearing a height of 15-8.5.
