Kevin Williams Runs 8:51.30 at NON; Mason Finley Wins Discus

While German Fernandez was out breaking the high school national records at 3K and 2 miles, Kevin Williams was breaking a record or two of his own.

The 9-minute barrier for 3200 or two miles had eluded Kevin Williams all season. He came up a few seconds short in the heat at the state meet. He came up a couple of seconds short in blustery weather at the Kansas Relays. Though he won the 3200 at the Great Southwest Classic, he lacked the strength at the end to make a serious run at nine minutes.

This time, the desired outcome came.

Only Rob Finnerty, and he only briefly, flirted with breaking up the top three--Fernandez, Luke Puskedra and Colby Lowe. But, of the remaining entrants, Finnerty and Williams were able to sustain their own paces the best. Williams and Finnerty made it very close at the end, but Finnerty edged Williams at the finish line for fourth. For Williams, the 8:51.30 was a personal best and a fitting way to close out one of the finest high school distance careers in Colorado history.

In other news of Colorado athletes, Buena Vista's Mason Finley won the NON discus with a throw of 206-11.
