2016's FINAL Senior Spotlight: RJ Russell of Richlands

For 40 consecutive weeks NC Runners has brought you a Senior Spotlight article that highlights some of the senior athletes that we don't get to hear from as much. The Class of 2016 has shown us what it means to persevere through even the toughest times, pushing towards the light at the end of the tunnel, and ultimately coming out on the other side stronger - as an athlete and a person. Among all of the triumphs we've been privileged to have witnessed, perhaps the greatest is reaching this milestone where you'll walk across the stage and turn your tassel. Cheers to the Class of 2016!

As our final Senior Spotlight of the year, we present you with Mr. RJ Russell of Richlands High School.

When RJ adorned his Richlands jersey for one final time two weeks ago at the NCHSAA 3A State Championships, he went out on the track and made sure it was a day to remember; not only did he secure his second individual state title by clenching the win in the 400m, but he also contributed to the his 4x800m squad's championship run as well. Though he is technically finished running for Richlands, he and several of his teammates have afforded themselves the chance to race just a few more times before going off to college. RJ plans to run the 400m, the 4x400m, the 4x800m, and hopefully the 800m at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in June. Once those competitions come to a close, RJ will prepare to set off to UNC-Wilmington - the place that feels just like home - to study, run, and make great memories with his second family.
