NCISAA 1A/2A State Meet Preview

Boys NCISAA 1A/2A Preview

NOTE: we do not get as many results from this classification as we do from the others in the state, so our database may be missing some performances. Our preview is based on the data in our database, as a performance list has not been released yet.  We apologize if anyone is left out.

Athletes to Watch

It will be interesting to see if Jarrett Gingrich (Epiphany) decides to run the 1600; he can be competitive in that race, but it might take away his legs for his better event, the 800.  Gingrich is the top seed there by three seconds, so if he is on his game he will be hard to beat. Likewise for Luke Evans (Westchester Country Day) in the 3200, as his season best is 23 seconds better than Quinn Schneider (Woodlawn).

Could a Brockman win both hurdle races?  There's double the chance, because brothers Caleb (a senior) and Joshua (a freshman) are both strong hurdlers.  Caleb holds the top mark in the 300 Hurdles, while Joshua ranks second in the 110 Hurdles behind Douglas McKinney (Coastal Christian), who could spoil the Brockman party by winning both races himself.

Elden White (Burlington Christian) has the fastest time in our system for both the 100 and 200, including a quick 10.87 in the former. Tyshawn Miller (Northside Christian) looks dominant in the shot put, as his PR of 45' 7" leads his nearest competitor by nearly 4 feet.  Ditto for Dylan Sellers (Westchester) in the long jump, especially if he can add half an inch to his season best and crack the 21-foot barrier.  The only other jumper in his range is Khalil Moore (Davidson Day), who also happens to be the top seed in the triple jump.  He should find himself battling McKinney for the gold in that event.  McKinney, in turn, is the favorite in the high jump with his mark of 6' 4".

Events to Watch

The 1600 Run should be interesting, with cross country state champ Schneider potentially facing Gingrich and Evans in the "middle ground" between their two specialty races.  Schneider has the advantage coming in, having run 4:24 this spring, but his challengers have both posted low-4:30 times, and they will certainly try to go with him.

Trevon Compito (Fayetteville Academy) has the top seed in a 400 that looks like it will be intensely competitive.  His time of 51.66 is only 0.29 faster than the 3rd seed, and less than a second better than the 6th seed!  Brennan Gantt (Fayetteville Christian) and Garrett Toth (Caldwell Christian) have also run under 52 this season.

The 4x800 should also be fun on Friday night, with Westchester Country Day holding a slim lead in the rankings over Trinity School and Concord First Assembly Academy.

The discus throw lacks an obvious favorite, so that could lead to some back-and-forth competition this weekend.  Brian Howell (Coastal Christian) is the veteran senior, but his top-seeded 130' 1" leads freshman Will Pruden (Rocky Mount Academy) by less than a foot.  Zeke Peay (Concord First Assembly Academy) is also right there with his season best of 128' 8".

Teams to Watch

Rocky Mount Academy has a chance to win three relays; the Eagles are the top seed in the 4x100 and 4x400 and sit second in the 4x200.  The quad is out of reach, though, as their 4x800 ranks 6th, over 20 seconds behind the top 3 teams.

It doesn't look like that relay strength will be enough to put them into contention for the team title, though.  Westchester Country Day is the strong favorite, with Concord First Assembly Academy and Coastal Christian likely duking it our for second place.
