NC Highlights from the Russell E. Blunt East Coast Invitational

Do we have a new 400 star in the state, or is Wilma Burton just passing through for summer track?

The Blunt ECI brings talent from multiple states (and Bermuda!) to North Carolina every summer, but today we're just going to focus on the performances of athletes from our own state. The overall meet was won by the Durham Striders, tabulating points from all the different gender and age group divisions.

High School HIghlights

  • Tamara Clark (High Point Central) continued her sizzling sophomore season, winning the 100 and 200 in the 15-16 age group. Her 11.89 and 24.45 both would have won the 17-18 races.
  • Wilma Burton (Greensboro Champions) had a breakthrough meet, clocking 56.01 NC #5 in the 15-16 girls' 400. Anyone know what school she attends?
  • Kennedy Thorne (Clayton) improved to 1:02.61 NC #4 in the 17-18 Women 400 Hurdles, the fastest time from a NC girl.
  • Rising sophomore Veronica Fraley (Wakefield) threw PR's in the discus (125' 8" NC #7) and shot put (38' 0.75"), claiming 1st place in the 15-16 girls in both events. Khayla Dawson (Olympic) duplicated the double golds in the 17-18 division, but did not set new season bests.
  • Cha'Mia Rothwell (Durham Academy) returned in style after sitting out the spring season, clocking 13.95 in the prelims of the 17-18 Women 100 Hurdles before ending up in 2nd in the final. She also jumped 5' 5" in the high jump .
  • Familiar names Brent Carroll (110H), Elliott Graves (400H), Rodney Rowe (100 Dash), Jordan Dale (Northwest Guilford), and Iyin Battle (Discus) all brought home gold medals in the 17-18 Men division.

Middle School Highlights

  • The meet turned out to be great for young female throwers. Jayza Lowry (Charlotte Flights) took over the state lead with a 92' 11" NC #1 toss, while Teteateh Snoh (Triangle Champions) threw 91' 9" to move up to NC #2. In the shot put, En'Joneah Reel (Prime Track) is now NC #1 with her 40' 10.5" mark, with Lowry sliding up to NC #2 by throwing 39' 1".
  • It wasn't just the girls, either: Timon Edelen (Junior Striders) dominated the 13-14 Boys throws, getting 44' 5.25 and 142' 3" with the lighter middle-school implements. He even won the javelin throw with a mark of 144' 2", giving us the hope that North Carolina might soon have its first true high school javelin star (South Johnston's Anna Raynor become a star in college, but did not throw the javelin in high school). Edelen's PR of 150' 8" is the best middle school mark in the MileSplit national database!
  • William Leach (High Point Blaze) ran 10:05.25 in the 3000, moving him to NC #3 in that event.
  • Kaylin Brown (Gastonia Eagles) clocked 59.41 NC #3 in the 400.
  • Jordan Sales (rising 8th-grader at Aycock Middle in Greenville) won the 100 and 200 in the 13-14 Girls division.
  • Jalen Houston (Hurley YMCA Warriors) won the 100 Hurdles and 200 Hurdles in the 13-14 Boys division.
