Friday is always a long day at New Balance Nationals Outdoor, especially when the weather is hot. Add in a lengthy storm delay it becomes an endurance contest for the athletes - and for the spectators, officials, and intrepid reporters, as well. But despite the weather, the first day of competition yielded some outstanding results for North Carolina athletes. Check out the Day 1 highlights below!

Day 1 Highlights:

  • The resume is almost complete. Ryen Frazier claimed her 3rd National Championship, winning the 5000 in 16:20.72. If she can win in the Two Mile Saturday, she will have a full set of outdoor distance titles to go with her current total of 5 all-time state records. She will end her career second in this race, though, as older sister Wesley's 15:55 will remain the state record (and probably for some time). Kathleen Mansure finished 6th in the same race, earning All-American status with her NC #6 All-Time 17:08.32.

  • Parkland's girls, who are a bit shorthanded at this meet, rallied on a 53.14 anchor leg by McKinley McNeill to finish 3rd in the 1000m Swedish Medley Relay. Cary finished 6th in the race, with both teams earning All-American status.

  • Elliott Graves (Reidsville) won the Emerging Elite 100 Hurdles in 14.43, after running 14.27 in the prelims. J'Len Wilson (Bunker Hill) also ran well in the prelims, clocking 14.30 NC #8.
  • In the Emerging Elite Boys' Mile, Tanis Baldwin battled to the finish line for a 3rd-place finish, running 4:13.67 NC #2.
  • NC's boys had a strong showing in the Emerging Elite 400. Ky-Mani Dula (Southern Alamance) broke the meet record, running 47.96. T.J. Bleichner, Koyaki Cobb, and Dylan Andrade all broke 49 and placed in the top 10.
  • Freshman Akira Rhodes (Cox Mill) ran 14.14 in the prelims of the Emerging Elite 100 Hurdles, moving her up to NC #6 this season. Hannah Dunston (Knightdale) also had a good prelim race, running 14.27 NC #8. The final was after the long rain delay, and the times were not as fast.
  • Lauren White moved into a tie for NC #4 in the Emerging Elite 100 Dash with a prelims time of 11.91, then finished 5th in the final.
  • Blair Ramsey (Grimsley) ran 4:59.59 NC #5 in the Emerging Elite Mile, finishing 3rd overall.
  • Southeast Raleigh's boys finished 4th in the Emerging Elite 4x800 with a time of 7:58.90.
  • Marcus Abraham (Victory Christian) finished 4th in the Emerging Elite Hammer Throw; his mark of 161' 11.75" is NC #6 All-Time.
  • David Melville (Northern Guilford) finished 3rd in the Freshman 2 Mile, running 9:48.04. Coleman Mitchell (Cary Academy) was just behind in 9:49.52.
