NCHSAA 1A State Championships

Boys & Girls 1A Performance List

On the boys side there are some obvious favorites after looking over the performance list:

  1. Topsail's Ahmad Garrison has thrown 14 feet further than the 2nd best in the boy's discus.
  2. Josh Wilmoth of North Stokes has cleared 13' in the pole vault and his nearest competition is back at 11'.
  3. NC Science and Math is 11 seconds faster than anyone else in the 4x800 and it looks like they can go much faster.
  4. Jordan-Matthews is the only team under 1:30 in the 4x200 with a fast time of 1:28.74. Second is back in the 1:31's. Also, they are the only team under 43.00 in the 4x100.
  5. Philip Curley is rolling and looks to be the heavy favorite in the 1600 and 800.

The other events look pretty tight. Should be a great meet with the championship possibly coming down the glorious 4x400. North Carolina Science & Math looks to be the favorite with all the points they will rack up in the distance events. They also have a few scattered athletes throughout. Polk County, Thomasville, Union, and Jordan-Matthews look to be the next best. Should be a fun one.

There are also favorites on the girls side:

  1. Avery County's Judith Dillashaw has thrown 116' 08" in the discus. Her nearest competitoin is back around 100'.
  2. Jasmine Young of East Columbus is out over the 18' mark in the LJ. 2nd is back around 17'.
  3. Glasha Covington has unleashed a 38' 8.50" triple jump, over 4 feet further than her nearest competition.
  4. Topsail is one of two teams under 1:50 in the 4x200, but they have broken 1:49.
  5. Jade Farlow is seeded 4 seconds faster than the 2nd place runner in the 800. She has run 2:27.

The girl's meet also looks to be a good one. Swain County has been ranked #1 in the NCRunners.com Coaches Poll for the entire season . . . will they live up to that ranking? On paper, I think Topsail looks like the favorite. Their team is tops in sprints and they have the 1A XC champ, Zatha, lurking around in the 1600 and 3200. Bishop, Swain, Albemarle, and South Stanly also look to be in contention. We'll see what happens.
