3A Boys Returning Indoor Rankings

Sprints/Hurdles

Jahmaal Daniel (Terry Sanford) is the top returner from any classification in the 55 Dash; his time of 6.35 is the US #4 returning mark.  His chief competition could come from William Cameron (Southern Durham), who started the 2013 indoor season very strong before gradually tailing off (perhaps battling an injury?).  Tyshawn Siders (Jacksonville) and Justin Titgen (Marvin Ridge) should also contend for the top 3.  Daniel and Titgen could square off in the 300, as they are the #1 and #2 returners in that event, respectively.  Twins DeAndre and LeAndre McGill (Northeast Guilford) appear to have a stranglehold on the 500, as they are the only guys back that have broken 1:08 (in fact, nobody else has broken 1:09).  DeAndre Thompkins (Swansboro) could be a contender there, however, if he decides to compete during the winter this year.  This classification features three returning hurdlers within 0.02 of each other, which should make for an interesting year.  Two of them are from North Forsyth (Gevontae Hardy and Brandon Gambrell), while the other is Clinton Jones (Hickory Ridge).  Keep an eye out for Damian Silver (Nash Central), who did not participate indoors in 2013 but had a strong outdoor season.

Field Events

Asheville has won indoors in past years, using strong field events as the foundation for success.  This year's squad looks to be built the same way, with three highly-ranked jumpers: Noah Tyson (#1 TJ, #5 LJ), Mekhi McGuyver (#2 TJ, #7 LJ), and Nate Tyson (#1 HJ, #4 LJ).  If you score those preseason rankings, that would be 39 points right off the bat.  Chris Glover (Terry Sanford) is the top returning long jumper from the 2013 indoor season, although Jonathan Marino (Marvin Ridge) broke 22 feet outdoors (the only 3A jumper who can claim that coming into the season).  Raykwon Torrence (West Rowan) is also a contender in what could become a very contentious event.  His teammate, Chris Patterson, has been farther than 45 in the triple, which puts him into the mix, as well.  Marvin Ridge also has Christopher Garrick, a 6' 4" high jumper, though Jaquell Bryant (Rocky Mount) will be the favorite in that event if he comes out for the winter season.  This classification has the top two returning throwers in the state in Colin Minor (South Brunswick) and Myquon Stout (Carson).  Minor was better indoors, but Stout improved to 58' outdoors to best Minor's 55'.  Mateius Brown (Western Harnett) has thrown over 54, which means this event is quite top-heavy.  Likewise, Ian West (Fike) is the best returning vaulter in North Carolina, with Corey Ginley (East Henderson) and Marshall Shank (East Rowan) the only two competitors that are in the same ballpark.

Distance

First he broke through on the track last spring, running 1:52 and 4:13 to win dual 4A titles.  Then, his team reclassified into 3A, he had a second breakthrough in cross country season, dropping 33 seconds all the way to 15:07 and another state championship.  All of that comes on the heels of having the fastest returning 1000 and 1600 times from last winter.  So what can Philip Hall (Terry Sanford) accomplish this year, and who can challenge him?  Steve Stowe (North Forsyth) and Jon Knight (Northern Guilford) ran fast 1000 times last year as well, while Andrew Fea (North Lincoln) is the only sub-4:30 miler back from 2013 indoor other than Hall.  Ryan Shannon (North Lincoln) is the #1 returner in the 3200, although Tanis Baldwin (East Henderson) is always a contender in both the mile and 2 mile.  Finally, keep your eye on Andrew Crowell (Enka), who only ran outdoor last year, but posted times of 1:57 and 4:24.
