The first gun of the fall season fired at 8 AM in Cary, and even though it was a scrimmage it certainly felt like cross country had started.

 

Featured Meet: Bay Six Kickoff Classic (WakeMed Soccer Park, Cary)

The rain began to fall lightly, just before the second race of the day (freshman-sophomore boys).  It didn't seem to dampen the spirits of the competitors or the spectators, though; umbrellas came out, kids continued to play frisbee on the open field, and the runners maintained their positive energy.  The precipitation certainly didn't hurt the course, either, as WakeMed can handle a little rain without getting too slippery or muddy.  As a result, the conditions were actually quite good for the runners, and the performances seems to justify that.

Highlights:

  • Mary Grace Doggett (Cardinal Gibbons, #245 below) set a new meet and 3K course record by running 10:37.  Teammate Sophie Ebihara (10:42, #246) was also under the old record.

  • Rebekah Greengrass (Panther Creek, #733 above) showed that she is healthy, as she challenged for the lead all race before finishing a strong third, only three seconds off of the previous course record.

  • Cierra Delarova (Enloe) showed that she is a force to be reckoned with this year, as she pushed the front-runners early and finished fourth, running 11:04.

  • Cardinal Gibbons has the best overall performance among girls' teams, but was not dominating.  Rachel Bartolomeo finished 5th, making the Crusaders very strong through 3 runners right now, with depth still to develop.

  • Millbrook's girls did not attend the meet, so we didn't get to see their fitness, but Leesville Road, Broughton (missing their top 3), and Green Hope (minus all their expected top 14) did not disappoint as favorites to advance from the 4A Mideast.

  • Kelly Fitzgerald was a suprise performer for Green Hope; the brand-new runner won the 9-10 girls race, clocking 11:18 (which would have been 6th in the 11-12 race).

  • Broughton's boys dominated, putting their top five (all juniors and seniors) under 9:25 and into the top 8 in the race.  They were led by individual champion William Roberson (#198 below).

  • Grant Rodgers (Heritage, #542 below) showed that the rumors about his strong improvement this summer were absolutely true, clocking 9:15 while barely getting edged out for the individual title.

  • Mihret Coulter (Apex) finished fourth, showing that he is primed to move into the top tier of runners in our state this year.

  • Broughton's 5th runner (Peter Millsaps, #196 below) was only 10 seconds behind their first, and their seventh guy was 23 seconds behind #1.

  • Behind the Caps, both Cardinal Gibbons (led by Cody Nagy, #265 above) and Apex looked good in the boys' races.  It will be interesting to see where the teams in 4A Mideast fall as we get more races in.

  • Justin Dorner-Thomas (#165 below), who has moved from Sanderson to Broughton, won the 9-10 boys race in 9:38, putting him in the top 7 for the Caps.

  • In all, there were 29 boys who ran faster than 10 minutes, and 15 girls that were under 12 minutes.

Highlights:

  • 11th-grader Sophia Bhalla (Lincoln Charter), fresh off a summer with the US Junior National Rowing Team, had the best time of the day among the girls, running 12:00.6 over the hilly and muddy course.

  • Tim Coffey (Mooresville) ran 10:01.9 in the junior race, earning the top boys' time of the meet.

  • West Forsyth runners won the sophomore boys (Nelson Russ, 10:16.6), senior boys (Garrett Farrimond, 10:05.0), freshman girls (Sarah Timberlake, 13:35.4), and sophomore girls (Ellen Spencer, 12:21.1).

  • Caroline McLeod (Gray Stone Day) took the senior girls' race in 12:41.9.

  • Daniel Alvarez (Surry Central) won the freshman boys' race, running 10:53.6.
